Rihanna is ready for her close-up. The Barbadian singer, who was nominated this year for an Emmy for acting in the ‘Saturday Night Live’ skit ‘Shy Ronnie,’ is ready to make her big-screen debut, signing on to star in Universal’s ‘Battleship,’ directed by Peter Berg (‘Hancock’) and co-starring Alexander Skarsgard (‘True Blood’) and Taylor Kitsch (‘Friday Night Lights’).
Though it is unclear what role Rihanna will play, ‘Battleship,’ based on the Hasbro board game, will be a live-action flick that stars Kitsch, as a naval officer, and his brother (Skarsgard), who lead a ship to fight against a superior force across the seas, in the skies and on land. The film, written by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber (‘Whiteout’), is currently set for release on May 25, 2012.
Like with Mariah Carey and Alicia Keys, Rihanna’s transition into movies comes after years of success as a musician. Releasing her debut album, ‘Music of the Sun,’ in 2005, the now 22-year-old hit her career stride in 2007 with the release of her third album, ‘Good Girl Gone Bad,’ which spawned eight singles that all charted in the top 20 positions of the Billboard Hot 100 and achieved platinum status in more than a dozen countries.
Her most recent album, ‘Rated R,’ released in November 2009, earned her the highest first week sales of any of her releases, selling 181,000 copies and bowing at No. 4 on the charts. The platinum-certified disc has produced the hits ‘Hard’ featuring Young Jeezy, ‘Russian Roulette’ and ‘Rude Boy,’ which held the top spot on the chart for five consecutive weeks.
Is Rihanna Headed For Movie Stardom?
Jul 27th
Pop superstar Rihanna has just signed a deal to make her big-screen acting debut … in a film based on a board game! No, it’s not Candyland.
The movie is going to be “Battleship,” and it will be based on the classic, Hasbro board game. The film will be directed by Peter Berg (“Hancock”) and will co-star Taylor Kitsch (“Friday Night Lights”) and “True Blood” hottie, Alexander Skarsgard. The two men will play brothers and sailors who attempt to fend off alien invaders. This will all occur, presumably, upon the titular battleship.
According to Variety, Rihanna’s deal was sealed on Monday, yet her part is yet to be determined. But based on some of the get-ups she’s parading around in during her “Last Girl on Earth” tour, she’d make a pretty fierce alien queen.
Rihanna is also up to her elbows planning gal pal Katy Perry’s bachelorette party. “It’s taking up way more time then than my tour,” Rihanna told “Access Hollywood.”
“It’s so much pressure. Her wedding (to Russell Brand) is probably going to be the best wedding I’ve ever been to and now I have to match the bachelorette party to that.”
Katy Perry herself has a suggestion for Rihanna. “I want her to strip at my bachelorette party,” Perry told Chicago’s KISS-FM radio show. “(I want to see) the whole bit. The whole bit…She’s hot, I love her.”

Gears of War Movie Back to Script Work
Jul 27th

Gears of War 3 might be on track to come out on the expected dates in April 2011 but it seems that the Gears of War movie, that fans have been waiting for since the first video game became an instant success on the Xbox gaming platform, is having some issues at the moment. Reports from Comic Con say that Cliff Bleszinski is now aiming to get more work done on the script of the movie and make sure that the changes bring down the estimated cost of about 100 million dollars.
It seems that the current change was a direct result of previous director Len Wiseman leaving the project. The script he was working off was closer to 2012 than to a straight action flick and Bleszinski, the creative mind behind the Gears of War trilogy, says that he is more interesting in making a movie that feels like District 9, the out of nowhere science fiction hit that arrived during the summer of 2009. The initial cost of the movie meant that many studios, maybe fearful of getting another video game to movie flop, were reluctant to actually green light the development.
Gears of War 3 was first show during the show Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, where an official trailer was first shown and the developers at Epic Games quickly confirmed reports that the game would be out in April 2011. The developers have also announced that the third game in the series would offer gamers a four player cooperative mode, encouraging them to work together in order to get through the story element of the game.
New characters, two of them female, will be introduced and the game will aim to answer most of the questions fans have about the Gears of War world. There will also be new weapons and new mutated enemies and the multiplayer will allow gamers to play as the Locust against a human team.

Hundreds of fans had waited hours in 35C (95F) heat and humidity just to catch a glimpse of the star. And by the time she arrived at 7pm the atmosphere was electric.
The crowd exploded into deafening screams as she appeared and began signing autographs.
She was still barely to be heard over the noise as made it to the stage to say ‘good evening and thank you’ in Japanese. ‘Konbanwa, arigato,’ she told the crowd.
CONFIRMED: Mjolnir Movie Toy for Marvel’s THOR Revealed at Comic Con
Jul 27th
This year’s Hasbro Comic Con booth revealed many surprises for Marvel fans. The action figures of Captain America, Thor, Loki and Odin for the Captain America and THOR movies were the probably the most unnoticed by the teeming masses. The most noticeable were the three giant display of the Iron Man 2 armor, Captain America shield and Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir. I recently received word from one of the Hasbro representatives who was working the booth at this year’s Con that the Thor display showed the actual Mjolnir toy which will be released in stores to correlate with the film.
The hammer is slightly smaller in scale (and noticeably thinner) than the actual prop used for the film. The Rune-style etchings on the hammer match the ones in the film, as well. The button located near the top of the handle emits “thunder” and striking sound effects when activated:

What we have yet to see is the Thor helmet Hasbro also designed to go hand in hand with this toy. As of right now, they will be sold separately.

Zac Efron to Star in New Nicholas Sparks Movie ‘The Lucky One’
Jul 27th
While we’re anxiously waiting for Charlie St. Cloud to come out (only three more days to go!), Zac Efron already has his next project lined up. The 22-year-old star has been cast as the main character in the new film adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ The Lucky One.
According to New York magazine, Zac will play the Logan Thibault, a Marine who has been carrying around a photo of a girl he’s never met because he believes it’s a good luck charm. But when he sets out to find the girl in the picture, he’s faced with many obstacles involving her and his secret past.
The film is Nicholas Sparks’ seventh to come to life on the big screen and his 14th book overall. Much like The Last Song, the story is set in North Carolina, so we expect to see plenty of the same beautiful landscapes that have made their way into so many of Sparks’ adaptations in the past.
Have you read The Lucky One? Do you think Zac is the right choice to play Logan? Or do you think someone else could do it better? We’re loving all of these dramatic roles that Zac’s taking. We think they’re a great look for him. Do you?
Comic Con Interview: Kenneth Branagh And Kevin Feige Talk Thor
Jul 27th
Though the Saturday night Marvel panel at Comic Con featured footage and announcements about Captain America, Thor and the forthcoming The Avengers, Thor is the only movie remotely far along enough in production to talk about. So after the panel wrapped up many, many members of the press trekked over to a nearby hotel conference center, where the director, producer and stars were on hand to ask whatever questions we could come up with about a movie we’ve seen 5 minutes of.
The conversations took place in a noisy room and were incredibly short, but we’ve got the full crew on video talking about one of the most highly anticipated movies of next year. We’ll be bringing you the full collection of interviews today, and first up are director Kenneth Branagh and producer (and Marvel chief) Kevin Feige, talking about the difference the budget makes for the director familiar with Shakespearean adaptations, and how they’ll work the wilder aspects of Thor into the reality of The Avengers. Make sure to stick around until the end, where Feige addresses the Edward Norton-as-Hulk firing controversy and swears, “There’s no bad blood.”
The new Angelina Jolie flick is worth its ‘Salt’ in spy movies
Jul 27th
This week’s “Salt,” starring Angelina Jolie and the talented Liev Schreiber, was enticing to say the least. What man doesn’t want to see Angelina kick butt?
Having said that, I enjoyed it as an action spy movie, but it was difficult finding a believable plot.
Jolie plays Evelyn Salt, a CIA operative who gets accused of being a double agent for the Russians.
She spends the entire film trying to elude capture and to prove she is loyal to the United States.
She manages to portray, in rapid succession, the hero and the villain throughout.
I purposely avoided reading any reviews for “Salt” prior to seeing it. I figured they would do the obligatory comparisons to Matt Damon’s “The Bourne” series, or to Jolie’s previous film “Wanted” (2008). Had I listened to the critics, I might have learned they were right.
Don’t get me wrong, I loved “The Bourne” series and wish there were plans for future movies, so going to see this film was an easy choice.
Jolie, having done some of her own stunts in the film, proved she can hang with the big boys in the male-dominated spy world.
“Salt” was directed by Phillip Noyce, who is no stranger to spy films, having directed the Jack Ryan series, “Clear and Present Danger,” and “Patriot Games.”
Noyce also has worked with Jolie in the 1999 film “The Bone Collector.
Although the storyline might leave you filled with, “C’mon! That is so unbelievable!,” the sequences with Jolie turning everyday items into weapons are classic.
There’s an intense chase scene in which she jumps from truck to truck that kept the audience thrilled.
If you go into this hoping to see classic spy action excitement, this film fills won’t disappoint.
