Paranormal Activity 2 gives a fright
Oct 28th
Paranormal Activity 2 still has me shaking and looking wearily at my basement door.
About a year ago, the first Paranormal Activity had movie-goers screaming in their seats, latching on to whoever was sitting next to them. This year is no different.
Starting out just like the last, the movie sucks you in slowly and has you waiting for something demonic every second. You don’t know whether to close your eyes or hold your ears. The presence, demon or what, starts out just playfully messing with things and then worsens.
After a few intimidating scenes, you may recognize a few faces, faces that were in the last movie. By the end of the film, the first Paranormal Activity makes much more sense.
I enjoyed the film, and am still so freaked that if by chance, there is a Paranormal Activity 3, I won’t be attending. If you’re looking for a fun Halloween scare, this is the movie to watch. According to boxofficemojo.com, roughly 50 percent of the show’s audience rated this film an A, I’ll totally jump on this bandwagon.

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 2
Oct 27th
Scary movies are supposed to scare you, make you think, or even make you want to close your eyes in disgust. “Paranormal Activity 2″ did none of those.
Did it raise my heart rate a little bit with some potentially freaky parts? Yes. Did any of those parts ever actually freak me out? No.
Now I didn’t expect much from this movie because, well, it is a sequel. With every hit movie (“Paranormal Activity”) comes a sequel that is of equal or (and more likely) lesser value.
…Now I am about to go off on a tangent here, so anyone not interested in a rant and more interested in a movie review, skip to paragraph 10…
Anywhere from “Halloween 2″ to “Porkys II: The Next Day”, Hollywood is littered with horrific sequels to help a production company make a couple million more off of semi-successful first movie.
Some directors (read: George Lucas) decide to make terrible 3 episode prequels to an extremely successful trilogy. Whether it be bad acting or just bad storytelling, sequels are rarely as good as the original.
The few exceptions come from the comic book movie realm in the form of Batman. The original Batman, with Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne, was a very good movie.
The first sequel “Batman Returns” was another great movie. However, I do acknowledge how terrible the next two Batman movies got with Joel Schumacher as the director (let’s be honest, The Governator is not the best Mr. Freeze). Now the Batman franchise did offer another surprise this past decade with “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight.” Now, back to the review.
“Paranormal Activity 2″ was sort of a let down when compared to its “prequel” “Paranormal Activity.” It lacked the clever camera angles that were so prevalent in Paranormal Activity.
Part of the problem was the fact that the footage that was used for the film came mainly from stationary security cameras. It also was very predictable.
Whether it be the stereotypical nanny sensing the bad demon or the father “not believing in ghosts”, this movie fell short on so many levels.
The plot revolves around a family who just had a newborn child named Hunter.
They experience a mysterious break in one summer night and decide to install some security cameras. We find out that Katie, our killer from Paranormal 1, is linked with our new family.
If you have seen the first movie then you won’t see any new “paranormal activities” in this sequel.
The doors slam shut, along with a very comedic baby and demon routine that provided some unexpected laughs.
Other than that, this is your typical over-priced sequel (“Paranormal Activity 2″ cost $3 million to make, rather than $15,000 for “Paranormal Activity”) that rides off the fumes of the franchises original hit. All in all, I give “Paranormal Activity 2″ a 1 out of 5.
John Danz Jr.’s Movie Musings: Paranormal Activity 2

John Danz Jr.’s Movie Musings: Paranormal Activity 2 By John Danz, Jr.
(‘
‘) It`s that time of week again, a time of which I bestow upon you my humble Movie Musings. As per usual, if you disagree with my review, you are most likely wrong.
Why? Well, the movie I`m reviewing this week is the sequel to one of the greatest comedies of all time – Paranormal Activity 2.
I saw the first one the day it came out, and I was greeted with a long line of eager moviegoers looking for a good scare – which led me to believe that it was going to be another over-hyped cultural phenomenon. Personally, a movie hasn`t truly scared me since I saw “Wolf” when I was three years old. It was a double feature at a drive in back in the summer of 1994. My parents thought I`d be asleep after the first feature was over – wrong as they usually were. I was scared fecal matter-less. Ever since, all the “Saw” and “The Shining” movies in the world have only made me laugh, although those are all quality made movies for their genre.
I`m not one of those uptight nimrods that looks for complete realism in movies, you know, just a decent plot, good acting and a gripping factor is good enough for me. Apparently, it`s good enough for some of the more famous critics as well. So when I saw Paranormal Activity 2, my expectations were lower than Justin Bieber`s level of relevancy in this culture.
Good thing, because this movie would make Alfred Hitchcock want to start making children`s animated features. It would make Shyamalan want to start a clown college and give Spielberg the desire to direct porno movies. However – it was HILARIOUS!
To me this movie was the same crap with a different twist. Cameras, pictures, trepidation, superstitions and minimal shock value. I think people are willing to be scared by this movie irrespective of the similarities to the first because we all love a good paranormal ghost story, especially one that seems realistic with handheld cameras and minimal Hollywood production. We all have our own tales of encounters with ghosts, which just adds to the scare value. However, I`m a skeptic of ghosts and demons – that probably doesn`t help me enjoy movies like this.
In the end, I don`t despise this movie because it had another contrived, dull storyline with more demons, scared girls getting sucked away, burning pictures and insipid zombie ladies killing more main characters. It has nothing to do with my skepticism of paranormal activity in life, it has everything to do with the fact that this movie is just plain terrible. How many times can you have the same antagonist from a previous film end up as the flesh fiend in the next?
However – if you`re like me and get laughs out of horror films, this film is tailor made for you. Be aware, just like horror film fans don`t like watching them alone, it`s better to watch this in a theater full of people – it adds to the comedy of the entire thing.
Grade: F in terms of being considered a real film, but I give it an A for contrived comedic value.
Now, if you`ll excuse me, I have to go kill the monster in my closet to clean my palette free of this cinematic car bomb.
Until next time!

Paranormal Activity 2
Oct 27th
Paramount Pictures theatrically released the suspenseful fear-factor sequel “Paranormal Activity 2″ on Oct. 20, 2010.
The movie takes place in a suburban home in Carlsbad, Calif., where everything seems perfectly normal until a robbery occurs. However, nothing is stolen. The family, including the husband, second wife, toddler and the teenage daughter from the first marriage, immediately have hidden surveillance cameras installed throughout the entire house.
The cameras provide the audience with a view of every bump and scare in the night over a period of six months, often providing the jumps and the scares throughout the movie, as it did in the first movie.
At a slow pace, disturbances arise. Loud noises are heard, objects move on their own, and the toddler becomes an object of fascination. The nanny feels a presence and tries to warn the family but instead she is fired.
The wife’s sister, Katie, who is also the star in “Paranormal Activity,” tells the family to ignore the illusions. Her husband from “Paranormal Activity,” Micah, appears in this movie as well.
As the mystery unfolds, the family is taunted and spooked by the supernatural presence, which leads to a dramatic downfall.
It is truly a movie that will tickle the audience with terror. It influences sweating, jumping, shrieking and nail biting. Of course, everyone bursts with laughter after realizing there is nothing to be scared of.
However, the sequel is very similar to “Paranormal Activity.” The scary occurrences, loud bangs and possessing of humans relate to the first movie, but the ending is by far more abrupt, which is incredible considering the ending to its predecessor.
Also, for those who have seen “Paranormal Activity,” the reappearance of Katie Featherston brings up many questions that cause much over-explanation.
This would entail that “Paranormal Activity 2″ would actually be a prequel. Thus, confusion may strike one’s mind.
Overall “Paranormal Activity 2,” rated R for language and violence, will keep audiences on their toes through this roller coaster ride of a horror film.
With Halloween right around the corner, now is the perfect time to check “Paranormal Activity 2.”
Paranormal Activity 2: You Have to See the Original Movie First
Oct 26th
Maybe they did it and I just didn’t hear it or read it, but Paramount Pictures should advertise the fact “Paranormal Activity 2″ is incomprehensible unless you have seen the original movie. There are so many allusions made to the first film that went right over my head, and so many actions in the second film that make no sense whatsoever. If you haven’t seen the first film I would totally advise you not to go see this new one.
In the second film we get introduced to a couple (Brian Boland and Sprague Grayden) who live in a nice house with his teenage daughter (Molly Ephraim) from a previous marriage (I guess) and their brand new baby son. They also have a dog and a housekeeper.
A few days later things begin to go bump in the night. The housekeeper tries using some sort of incense to rid the place of the “bad spirits” but it doesn’t seem to work. The mother and her stepdaughter are suspicious of the place being haunted but the father is adamantly non-convinced. He just gets cameras installed around the house for protection.
The mother’s sister (Katie Featherston) and her boyfriend (Micah Sloat) are interested at first but then decide not. Things proceed until one night when all hell breaks loose. That is when the audience starts squirming, laughing and screaming.
The movie has some good things going for it. The acting is really good for this type of movie, especially by Sprague Grayden, and the script keeps the tension building. The use of having a baby in jeopardy is a cheap trick but it works. The same can be said of having the dog in danger.
The film is rated R for profanity and violence.
The problem — the BIG problem — is the confusion caused by a script that relies on the fact that the audience has seen the previous film. There are millions of potential members of the audience who haven’t. And if you haven’t seen the first movie then there will be tons of unanswered questions once you finish viewing this second edition.
Director Tod Williams should have had enough insight into the totality of the film to know it wasn’t working. You can’t leave it up to the audience to fill in the blanks if the first movie answered all the questions. Enough of that film should have been pulled into this one to make it make sense.
All in all this movie has a few mild jolts of suspense and terror but not enough to make it worth your time — especially when it makes no sense unless you have seen the first film. A warning of that fact would have gone a long way.
I scored Paranormal Activity 2 an incomprehensible 4 out of 10.
Movie Review: Paranormal Activity 2
Oct 25th
Released three years after its 2007 precursor (written and directed by Oren Peli) “Paranormal Activity,” this equally low-budget, low-fi demonic horror film with underdeveloped characterization shows little maturity or any sign of significant improvement in terms of substance. Bottom line, its nothing worth losing sleep over, but if you’re in the Halloween spirit this weekend and have nothing to do then why not?
Alarmed after their lofty suburban home suffers from a string of what seem to be mysterious ransackings, in which nothing is taken except for a single necklace with sentimental value, Kristi (the sister of Katie from the first movie) and her husband Dan have security cameras installed inside and out in an attempt to figure out what exactly is happening.
Which, without giving anything away, is 60 days before the death of Micah (the guy who was thrown like a rag doll at the end of the first one).
This detail proves to be more beneficial and targeted upon the films budget and theme rather than being imperative to plot or characterization. Very little of the captured footage is actually reviewed or taken into consideration or brought up.
There are about two scenes where it is reviewed and integrally worked into the storyline but Dan’s teenage daughter, who had little to do with the installation, does it. In fact, little is learned or heeded from the footage, making for a bunch of flat characters that fall victim to demonic presence.
What did Director Tod Williams (hired by Paramount and Dreamworks) and writer Michael Perry have in mind then besides attempting to bank off of the precursor? The home security camera footage along with home video (taken by the family), though more stable and accessible in terms of angles this time around just got annoyingly convenient. How much room does this aesthetic distance give you to totally ignore other important elements of craft?
If it were a movie written, directed and produced by a bunch of college students then probably quite a bit. But it’s not. This is a covertly branded Hollywood blockbuster. There’s ploy and planning going on behind the scenes and it’s transparent throughout.
Haunted frying pans, haunted pool cleaners and haunted baby monitors, come on.
To be fair, there are a number of “jump” scenes that will in fact make you jump in your seat. The back and forth ploy of no sound then an earful of boom could scare anyone. Though, Williams and Perry could have just hired theaters to shoot off live ammunition during screenings to do produce the same deafening effects.
To credit this film beyond providing stock situations that enable stock responses would be allotting it too much. If you like the horror genre for the sake of it being the horror genre then this is your movie.
Paranormal Activity 2 Scares Up Audiences To The #1 Spot!
Oct 25th

It’s still a week before Halloween, but movie-goers were in the mood to be spooked this weekend.
Paranormal Activity 2 was the #1 movie in its opening weekend, taking in an impressive $41.5 million.
Last week’s number one movie, Jackass 3D went down a notch, taking the number two spot with an additional $21.6 million.
The Bruce Willis and Helen Mirren spy caper movie Red took the third spot with $15 million.
Matt Damon‘s new movie, Hereafter was a bit of a disappointment coming in at number four in its opening weekend with a little more than $12 million.
We’re sure it didn’t phase him though as he was probably preoccupied with his new baby daughter, Stella.
So what did U see this weekend??
