Captain America: The First Avenger gets first trailer
Mar 25th
Today we get our first look at the new Captain America: The First Avenger.
The leader of the Avengers is getting his origin story reboot movie this summer to go along with the Iron Man, Thor, and Spider-Man origin movies being produced in the same Avengers arc.
The trailer showcases an overview of the core origin: Rogers’s volunteering for a secret super-soldier project in WWII, and being selected as the recipient of a serum which transforms him into an ultra powerful fighter for the Allies. None of this should be spoiler for anyone whose bothering to read this, but it’s exciting to see another new take on the character, who has been all but ruined by previous attempts at film depiction.
I think what I most appreciate about this new adaptation is the muted costume.
Captain America has always seemed too colorful to me. It works fine in the sequential art version of his story, but in a modern film, colors like the bright blues and reds of his comicbook costume are just too much.
The only bright color on the character here seems to be the shield, which we already saw briefly in Iron Man 2, and which adds a stylistic flair.
In fact, the entire movie seems to have been filmed in cool, muted yellows, greens, and browns, something which wasn’t completely clear from the stills we’ve already seen. This attention to earth-tones is appropriate, I think.
It’s not quite sepia-tone, which is a good thing, but it gives that same feel of age and history which works for the origin story of, not just Captain America, one of the few super hero origin stories which needs to be left in the time period it was written to function (unlike, say, Spider-Man or Iron Man, which could take place at any time and still work), but is also the origin story of The Avengers as a team.
Also, I was worried that using CGI to put Chris Evans’ face on a scrawny body would look dumb or awkward, but it seems that they know what they are doing. The future of movie making is scary-rad, when you think of the implications of that technology.

Director Kenneth Branagh on Thor Movie (2011) Villains and new Trailer
Feb 20th
![]()
In the new trailer (below) that was released a few days ago for Thor, we see all kinds of kick-arse action from Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Odin himself – Anthony Hopkins!
Right after the trailer debuted, Director Kenneth Branagh, clued us in on some of the brutes and beasts that the Asgardian Warriors are going to have to face.
Of course, we get a look at the trickster Loki, played by Hiddleston, with Branagh saying, “A brother who is unhappy is a dangerous relative to have.”
From there, fans of the comics will recognize where this is going, (but I won’t spoil) with, “The story involves a clash with an ice planet,” says Branagh, “and the frost giants who live therein. They — as might be suggested by the name — are enormous creatures of incredible power who have been robbed of their power and glory by Odin, Thor’s father. What fuels a lot of this intense battle is revenge. This is an angry race, trying to get back at Thor and the Asgardians, the self-proclaimed guardians of the universe.”
Finally, as introduced at last years San Diego Comic Con, Branagh mentions ‘an incredible war machine known as “The Destroyer.”‘
“This series of metal bands form a giant, walking beast and open to reveal terrifying firepower,” that the ruler of Asgard controls (note: he didn’t specifically state Odin! Spoilers!).
“In the right hands, this incredibly powerful device — awesome in its killing quality — is potentially a creature of extraordinary protective powers,” says the director. “In the wrong hands, it is a nightmare.”
In addition to all the all out action, the recent Thor trailer also includes a bit of humor – to offset all the “godliness.”
Branagh says in order to get Thor to connect with audiences they had to bring him down from his high pedestal in Asgard, “It’s important for Thor to be able to laugh at Thor.”
“With the fantastical element we’re asking people to go along with, one way to help that happen, and allow it to be dramatic and serious when it needs to be, is to have a sense of humor about it,” says Branagh.
While this won’t be Thor goofing at himself, Branagh notes on the “prince of the cosmos,” “When you reduce a man who is arrogant by temperament, extremely oppressive and used to having his own way, dressed, um … unusually, you are immediately in a position where you have comic friction.”
“The way into making a god attractive is to find out where his experience connects to a human one,” the Director tells us.
When asked about Thor being a “coming an age story,” in that it’s a god who falls only to be brought back up through a connection to humanity, Branagh states, “It’s true that it’s an identity tale. These films can allow more space for the kind of character element that you accurately described, to allow more space for, as you say, a coming-of-age-story, a prodigal son story, an identity story … Hopefully you can layer into the larger entertaining experience and make it resonate with the audience.”
Besides Loki and the comical aspects to Thor, the trailer saw more of the ever lovely Natalie Portman. Branagh tells us that she won’t just play the typical human love interest to the Gods and Goddesses, “When you cast someone like Natalie Portman, the character can’t just be the love interest. She is already an interesting dynamic character in her own right. It helps to have that conflict and interplay.”

The Black Keys fool IMDB.com with fake movie trailer
Feb 13th

HollywoodNews.com: The Black Keys, who are up for four Grammy Awards today, tricked nearly everyone—even movie website IMDB.com—with their latest comedic shenanigan: a music video-turned-movie trailer.
The blues-rock outfit released a faux trailer for a feature-length film titled, “Howlin’ For You”—which is also the name of a track off Brothers, their 2010 record that marked the band’s breakthrough from cult favorite to widespread recognition. Set to the song’s hard-edged guitars and pummeling drumbeat, the trailer is three minutes worth of classic B-movie fare that would have Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez applauding. The trailer tells the story of a sexy female assassin who’s something akin to a black widow spider: She seduces men and then kills them post-coital, mostly because of daddy issues stemming from her childhood.
Although the story and characters are overwrought, the trailer fooled enough people to take it somewhat seriously. Movie website IMDB even posted the “Howlin’ For You” trailer on in its featured trailers section on the front page. But, seeing as Hollywood will make (or remake) almost anything these days, The Black Keys’ “Howlin’ For You” video might just be campy enough to work.

Trailer for Disney’s Teenage Comedy ‘Prom’
Feb 13th
Is there anything worse than a movie about high school and the importance of the prom? The answer is yes, but after watching the terrible trailer for Disney’s new teenage dramedy Prom, I’m starting to have second thoughts. Prom stars semi-recognizable actors Aimee Teegarden from the TV show Friday Night Lights and Nicholas Braun from the upcoming Kevin Smith horror movie Red State.

Prom is a story about…well…the prom and how a group of teenagers go about locking down dates for it. From what I can see in the trailer, it seems like Teegarden is the leading lady in this one, and Braun fulfills the dufus/jackass role or the main supplier of laughs. The rest of the young cast looks far older and more attractive than the teeenagers I went to high school with.
The movie is due to be released in theaters April 29, 2011, and I can say with confidence that I won’t be seeing it in theater or from the comfort of my own home.
If you like painfully bad pop music then you’ll love this trailer. Here’s the trailer for Prom.
